Down to DIY

I’ve hesitated to write DIY blogs in the past - what does that have to do with a sustainable business consultancy? This blog is not intended to land me a client, but rather to inform consumers of how easy DIY is! If anything, potential clients should view this as dedication to my field ;) The last time I did a DIY Instagram post (DIY candles, reusing old candle votives) I got a lot of “where’s the blog!?” So I’m getting ahead of that this time.

Please note that I have assembled all of these wares over years of being a DIY’er. I can understand that, at the outset, this seems very expensive to accumulate. But we all have to start somewhere, and today it saved me ~$80! Three bath salts ($20 each, conservatively) and one yoga mat cleanser ($20 conservatively). This also gives me a chance to reuse containers.

Here’s my sustainable business play: Don’t feel like investing in all of the below ingredients? Listed are some Toronto businesses which offer these ingredients in bulk to suit your needs, AND forgo packaging!:

Urban Bulk & Refill

Created for Earth Month Day 11 - I bring you: DIY bath salts, reusing old containers.

What you’ll need:

  • 1 cup coarse sea salt

  • 1 cup Epsom salts

  • 1/4 cup baking soda

  • essential oils (I used sandalwood, eucalyptus, lemongrass & lavender)

  • dried flowers - optional

  • 2-3 containers - REUSE OPPORTUNITY

** This is one of many recipes, you can add 1 cup pink Himalayan sea salt for some colour!

I’m a visual learner and hate superfluous text, so here it is:

Bonus:

Once I have all this gear out, I think to myself: Why not DIY some yoga mat cleaner? I used a ‘recipe’ from My Essential Business, where you can order all your reusable containers.

What You’ll Need:

  • 2 drops Orange essential oil

  • 2 drops Tea Tree essential oil

  • 2 drops Peppermint essential oil

  • 1 tbsp Witch Hazel (alcohol-free)- I happened to have some from my DIY hand sanitizer phase I tried March 2020

  • A few pinches of Epsom salts dissolved into distilled water

  • spray bottle (I had a net new one, but reuse works too!)

I hope this inspires you to DIY some more. Save a buck and some plastic.

**PS I get no $ from anything linked. Just trying to promote some eco businesses.
